PHILANTHROPIC PHOTOGRAPHERS: Works from the Permanent Collection
AUGUST 27 - NOVEMBER 17, 2024
Christian Gallery
In conjunction with The Power of Photography, the Museum presents this installation of photographs from our holdings, most of which have been donated by the artists themselves. The collection’s first photographs, two works by Mississippian Birney Imes, were given by the artist in 1984. Chuck Hemard donated his Raining Fire: Iron Pour Demonstration in 2009, and the Museum purchased his #3, Thomas County, Georgia over a decade later, in 2021. Laurel native Hunter McKelva Cole gave two of his works in 2018. The largest group of photographs to enter the collection were donated in 2015 through The Museum Project. This philanthropic association of American photographers, led by Robert von Sternberg and Darryl Curran, has the goal of expressing gratitude towards institutions that support the photographic art form. Works by von Sternberg and Curran, as well as Todd Walker, were acquired. We are pleased to celebrate the generosity of these artists.
