Fourth Grade Tours Program

4th grade students will gain an understanding and appreciation for the Choctaw culture through guided gallery tours, interactive weaving demonstrations, live dance performances, and hands-on crafts.

From start to finish, the Choctaw Days program will last approximately 2 hours. During their time at the Museum, students will rotate through different “stations” as they learn about the Choctaw culture. Stations will include:

  • Basket Gallery Tour
Trained docents will lead your students through a guided tour of the Native American Basket Gallery, highlighting the Choctaw baskets and explaining their importance to the tribe.
  • Hands-On Basket Demonstration
Students will learn the basic weaving techniques used by the Choctaw and other tribes while getting to touch and feel various materials and baskets.
  • Arts & Crafts
From weaving to beading, students will create their own crafts inspired by traditional Choctaw art forms.
  • Choctaw Dance Performances, Sport Demonstrations, and Fry Bread Samples
Representatives from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians will perform traditional tribal dances while explaining their significance and demonstrate the sport of stickball and discuss the importance of the game to their culture. Each student will also get to taste a sample of traditional Choctaw fry bread, a food that helped many of the tribe survive the Trail of Tears.

The Choctaw Days program is FREE! Additionally, the Museum is proud to offer bus stipends to offset the cost of transportation. Adopt-A-Bus forms will be sent to all registered teachers.
