Education

LRMA offers a variety of programs which serve as extension of the collections and exhibitions. Workshops, lectures and guided tours for all ages foster a better understanding of the visual arts. New and exciting programs are presented each quarter for the entire family.

LRMA works closely with the local school systems to provide a unique environment for enjoyment of the visual arts. The Fourth Grade Tour program is sanctioned by the Mississippi Department of Education and serves 2,000 students each year with an emphasis on the LRMA Native American Basket Collection.

The Museum's Art Trunks program is an innovative project making art units available to schools and youth organizations across the state of Mississippi. The self-contained trunks, which relate to the Museum's permanent collections, are available for use by Mississippi teachers free of charge. Each trunk contains a teacher's manual and art materials for up to 30 students. Trunks are available on color-mixing, print-making, basket-weaving and Mississippi artists.

The Heritage Arts Festival, held the first Saturday in October, is a free, family-oriented event for the whole family featuring hands-on arts and craft activities.

Art Talk is a series of noon lectures featuring topics based on a variety of arts-related issues. Art Talk, held on the third Thursday of each month September - April, is open to the public at no charge.

In conjunction with the local Association for Excellence in Education, the Museum serves as an adopter for the Pine Belt Educational Resource Center, an alternative school for at-risk youth, and as a partner with the gifted program at Jones Middle School in Laurel.

Art Classes are offered for children and adults throughout the year.
